On-going research
My research at LEESU deals with the management of water resources in metropolitan areas, in particular with observation et numerical modelling of lakes and reservoirs. In metropolitan areas, lakes and reservoirs provide essential ecosystem services: retention of rainwater and pollutant load, bathing and water sports, spots of biodiversity, ecological continuity...
These aquatic environments are severely affected by multiple anthropogenic pressures. In a context of climate change and urban sprawling, global concerns are on the one hand water shortages and on the other hand, the deterioration of water quality, often caused by eutrophication and cyanobacterial blooms.
To preserve water resources, new management approaches seek to reintroduce a more "natural" hydrological cycle. However, their implementation requires an evolution of infrastructures, practices and land use and can lead to conflicts in a territory, for example between urban and peri-urban areas. In order to establish an effective water resource management strategy based on scientifically established results, validated tools are needed.
The objective is to develop innovative tools for monitoring, modelling and assessment of lake and reservoir water quality.
Two complementary approaches are implemented: field observations, in particular through continuous measuring platforms, and numerical modelling of the ecosystem.
Prospective scenarios building relies on eco-hydrological modelling of the continuum « catchment - receiving waters ».
Currently four projects adress these topics: 1) OSS-cyano on the development of an aerial warning system for cyanobacteria blooms (OSS-cyano project); 2) ANSWER (collaborative project with NIGLAS China) on numerical modelling of gloabl change impacts on cyanobacteria dynamics (ANSWER project); 3) MoMa (collaborative project with Brazil) on the coupled modelling of reservoirs and their catchment and 4) Karaoun (collaborative project with Lebanon) on the association of remote sensing imagery and modelling for reservoir management.
