2. Research topics
- Territorial biogeochemistry: characterization of food/excretion systems through the analysis of nutrient flows (fertilizers, food, excretions...)
- Agricultural systems: monitoring of nitrogen and phosphorus, characterization of food systems circularity
- Sanitation: efficiency of sanitation systems at the basin and national levels, return of excreted nutrients to the soil via sewage sludge
- Source separation: of urine and feces, to return to the field before dilution in urban wastewater
3. On-going research
My PhD subject is entitled “Potential contribution of human excretions as fertilizing materials for agricultural production” and is financialy supported by École Polytechnique.
This work is supervised by Bruno Tassin and Fabien Esculier. It is hosted by the OCAPI research programs on food/excretion systems and human urine and feces management. The work also benefits from scientific exchanges with the METIS laboratory.
In order to identify the potential of nutrients present in human excretions, this thesis is structered by several research topics:
- Current status of human excreta management in France: detailed quantification of nitrogen and phosphorus flows after excretion. Historical evolution of purification yields of wastewater treatment plants, rate of return to the field
- Agronomic potential of nutrient recycling (nitrogen, phosphorus) of human excretions: comparison of the spatial distribution of nutrients present in human and animal excretions with crop needs. Exploration of the rate of nutrient autonomy covered by human excreta in different food systems
