" Environmental changes, many of them man-made, proceed at unprecedented rates at spatial scales ranging from local to global. What are the consequences of these changes for ecosystem functioning ? I will address this question using litter decomposition as a central process in many aquatic ecosystems. Specifically, I will present results from field experiments to explore how three factors of global environmental change may affect decomposition rates in streams and freshwater marshes : warming, sustained nutrient enrichment, and changes in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. While the mechanisms underlying some of the observed effects appear to be straightforward, others are unexpected, underscoring the need for manipulative field experiments in the attempt to forecast consequences of future environmental change on ecosystems."
